21 November part 2 Leeds KONP round up and future events

Longer than usual, so you might like to get a cup of tea (or two),

02/11: Bonfire against Austerity – please see Facebook page for photos and details

07/11 “How we are going to reclaim our NHS” with Sally Ruane – video is currently with Sally Ruane for review and will be circulated after that is completed. Investigating the possibility of a charter for the NHS together with Leeds Hospital Alert.

Health Watch public involvement session 7th November – two KONP members attended.Lots of good intentions; uncertainty about it’s evolution. Linn Phipps, chair of Health Watch is on the health and Wellbeing Board and spoke up at the last meeting.

09/11 People’s Assembly against Austerity Conference – health strand. KONP members to continue to monitor NHS developments and feed into PA. Next meeting 7th December, Broadcasting Place to review and agree submission to National  People’s Assembly.

11/11 Hospital Alert meeting with representative from Leeds West CCG. Outlined the implementation of CCGs in Leeds and challenges. Will explore patient’s charter above. Investigating online funding and donation options to be linked with KONP & NHA Party if applicable. Next meeting in January

15/11 Protest against the NHS funding allocation, organised by the Labour Party. KONP attended. Deadline for the review of the proposed formula is mid December. So far there is no indication of budging from the switch in weighting from deprivation to old age, which means the north will lose out to the south. Leeds estimated loss is £84m.

16/11 MedSin National Conference, Leeds University. KONP there both days. Made some useful links. Impressed that students seem to be getting on board re the fight against privatisation. Medsin National Week of Action live now

20/11 Health & Wellbeing Board. Issues raised re mental health services satisfaction declining, variance between GPs in service provided, Hospital Trust due for massive inspection in the New Year. Leeds has been accepted as an Integrated Health and Social Care Pioneer. It’s the only big city in the programme but there is no new money and 2 year plans are supposed to be signed off in Feb. The Head of Adult Social Care said that this haste knocks talk of co-design and co-production with service users into touch. Also difficult to see the Hospitals giving up their resources to fund community care to try to reduce hospital admission when hospitals are short of beds and there is looming crisis in A&E capacity. In the jargon it is called having ambitious plans to deliver “within the reducing resource envelope”, which is also what the NHS Call for Action is about ( see below). The Leeds Health budget situation remains dire quite apart from the potential loss from the change in the NHS Allocation funding. (YEP carried front page headline on 22.11 “ Warning on £250m Health Cash Gap)

KONP National strategy meeting – KONP produced new guidance and campaign packs. The KONP Transatlantic Trade Investment Partnership working group are meeting with John Healy who has set up an all party, backbench parliamentary TTIP group to pursue trying to get health services exempted from any treaty agreed. KONP Christmas cards currently in production.
